If you follow us on Facebook you might remember seeing these two gorgeous ladies' picture we posted a couple of Saturdays ago, as they made time between Real Estate appointments to drop by the store in hopes of being inspired.  (Dropping by may be a slight exaggeration...as Sonja and Kelly are Keller Williams Real Estate Agents from Flower Mound) 

Sonja (left) seemed especially focused on inspiration for her guest bedroom.

score a few weeks ago.

What's New at L.H.O.?

For those of you who follow or frequent our blog, you may remember the comedy, video version of What's New Wednesday back in May. Jodi was filming and I was describing the new inventory for the week.  When we got to this cute white shabby chest, I mentioned that Jodi thought it would make a nice changing table for a baby's room.  My question...why would Jodi be thinking about baby furniture?  She assured us ON VIDEO there was no news.  It was simply a logical suggestion for the piece, based upon size, shape and storage capacity.  Hmmmmm

Welcome to September 16th...What's New at L.H.O??  Jodi is going to be needing a changing table after all and I'm going to be a Grandma a.k.a. KiKi Dee!!

Thursday Thunder!

Thursday Thunder, the Thursday edition of What's New Wednesday.  Honoring the weekly update of new inventory and also paying our respects to Mother Nature who graciously spared us in last evening's storm.

I was working away in the back office after I locked the front door determined to get What's New Wednesday posted before leaving for the day, slightly frustrated by Internet connection problems and also ATT iPhone challenges (where many of my photos reside).  To say I was focused on my task at hand, oblivious to my surroundings might be an understatement.

Yes, I was aware of the raining and wind outside, both were hammering the skylight above me.  Hmmmm, big storm.  But what is that noise, that whining sound?  Is it our AC?  Our lights? Have they over heated and started to buzz like the old halogen light bulbs?  Irritated I walked out to the showroom, turned the off the AC and the lights taking a quick glance outside at the weather hammering Irving Blvd.  That darn humming, it won't go away!   Oh well, back to my task of posting What's New Wednesday when the phone rings, it's my hubs who informs me there is a Tornado headed to Irving Blvd and the Medical District!  "The Storm Sirens are sounding...can't you hear them"???  (Ohhhh, that's what that noise is).  I look out the window again to see a picture very similar to the one above.  "It can't be that bad...I see blue sky".  (I am obviously an optimist.)

After a short deliberation on staying put or racing home, I chose racing home and no pun intended I literally raced the storm all the way home.  As I passed thru the intersection of Forest and Preston 820 AM WBAP Radio reports "The storm has traveled to north Dallas currently the center of the storm is just south of LBJ at Forest and Preston"...are you kidding me?

I run in the house, Ray has the news on and we see this photo below flashing before our eyes!  This could have easily been a photo of LHO had the storm touched down just a couple miles earlier. 

We are so thankful and send our thoughts and prayers to those affected by this damaging storm.

This Saturday: The Dallas Flea

If your summer vacations have wrapped up and you're going to be around town this Saturday, make a point to visit The Dallas Flea, happening from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at South Side on Lamar. This newly minted fair is the well-edited assortment of goods culled by Daily Candy Dallas editor Brittany Edwards. Think home decor, clothing, furniture, jewelry, and more - most of it made locally. (For a list of vendors, click here.) Bonus Perk: Arrive early for free swag bags. Dogs are welcome and kids get in free.

Discovering Dallas's Bishop Arts District

Guest blogger Alison Miller here! You might already know that I’m a big fan of the Bishop Arts District. One of the best aspects of this delightful pocket of shops and restaurants in Oak Cliff is that it's constantly gaining speed. Every time I go, there’s at least one new place to visit. Last night's visit during the monthly First Thursday soiree was no exception.
Consider N. Bishop Ave. your main drag. The surrounding streets are home to some 50+ eating and shopping establishments. Among them are some of Dallas’s best restaurants—Tillman's, Hattie's, and Bolsa, D magazine’s pick for the best new restaurant of 2009, giving you plenty of reason to stick around after a day of shopping.

On the first Thursday of every month the stores stay open late, a band plays on the corner of Bishop and Eighth, and the streets fill with people. Usually, a five dollar donation gets you a wine glass that you can carry to participating stores for a splash of vino by Dallas’s own Times Ten Cellars. While last night's Wine Walk was officially canceled (due to the chance of rain perhaps?), it didn’t stop many of the affable shopkeepers from staying up after-hours. Some of them even popped their own bottles or crafted their own adult concoctions.

I revisited some of my favorites—Zola’s Everyday Vintage, which specializes in clothing, housewares, and jewelry from the 1940s through the 1970s; Make, for stylish goods and clothing created by crafty locals; and Dude, Sweet Chocolate, where you can watch artisan chocolate being handmade, then taste the bounty. I can't get enough of the inventive list of ingredients used by chocolate-maker Katherine Clapner, which ranges from blue cheese to rose petal jam. (By the way, you can swing by here anytime for a sample.) Shambhala sells all-natural handmade soaps and lotions, and the Soda Gallery carries the city’s largest selection of rare, small-batch soda.

But my big discovery last night was a store celebrating its first day in business. Dirt is a florist that beautifully defies the sleepy notion of the standard rose bouquet. In addition to sleek floral designs and wedding bouquets, owner Sonya Worden also makes her own line of folksy invitations - customized to any event. Last night her candlelit shop felt like a secret garden full of artful, modern arrangements. I have to say, I'm excited to watch her - and the rest of this neighborhood - continue to blossom.
